The flow of water and ink.

To tune into the harmony between the relentless flow of Life and the inner harmony within oneself and the universe, to listen to one’s inner self and observe the flow of one’s life energy, to trust one’s intuition.

It was only when I stopped resisting the fierce currents of life and myself, and listened to my own inner sense, that I surrendered to the natural flow of the river and found myself where I am now. Today, I draw inspiration for my work from one of the oldest painting traditions in the world – ink painting (Japanese: sumi-e). This painting technique came in my life over a decade ago, while walking the unfamiliar streets of distant Taipei, and later Osaka, embracing the philosophy of minimalism and simplicity. Monochrome ink painting is the basis of my artistic expression. It allows me to capture the essence of an object, leaving aside unnecessary details, finding depth in simplicity, in emptiness, in unfilled space.

In my work, I strive to embody the principles of Japanese aesthetics, which are manifested in my work through minimalist compositions, subtlety, and calligraphic strokes. Working with sumi ink and handmade paper (xuan, washi), I mount the paintings on linen and canvas, occasionally incorporating elements of natural wood. The works in the exhibition mainly depict motifs from East Asian landscapes and typical elements of the Lithuanian landscape that are so close to my heart – cranes, herons, lush grassy hills. In my work, I rely on the inner emotion conveyed by the brush itself – the brush dances and the ink sings. Then a hill appears in one place, a lakeside or a fisherman’s boat in another.

In my artistic journey, I involve the philosophy of exploration and discovery. I manifest my creative path by observing nature and by practicing being in the moment: slowing down, noticing, reflecting, embracing the essence of life in all its darkness and light, shadow and light, emptiness and abundance.
